Santiago's story is the cornerstone of This Ole Dog Rescue's mission. Discovered swimming off the shores of Oahu, Hawaii, this elderly dog was dehydrated, covered in ticks, and facing severe health challenges at around 14 years old. He was suffering from severe UTI, ear infections, kidney disease and dental issues. The shelter made the decision to euthanize him but his fate took a remarkable turn when a local rescue intervened, saving him from the shelter.
Santiago found his way into the loving care of our founder, Belinda, becoming This Ole Dog Rescue's inaugural rescue. This brave senior dog transitioned from the ocean to a condo in Waikiki, sharing his life with a 17-year-old cat named Princess. With patience and love, Santiago adapted to city life, learning to navigate elevators, walk on a leash, and even share a bed with his newfound family.
As Santiago blossomed, he transformed from a timid dog to a beacon of joy in the neighborhood, capturing the hearts of passersby with his gentle presence. Despite an injury that required a wagon for walks, Santiago's spirit remained unbroken, radiating happiness to all who crossed his path.
Santiago wasn't just a rescue; he became Belinda's constant companion and source of solace after her mother's passing. His unwavering love and lessons in resilience reaffirmed the path of a senior and hospice dog rescue. Santiago's memory lives on as an inspiration, a reminder of the boundless love and strength found in the hearts of senior dogs. This Ole Dog Rescue continues to honor his legacy, one senior dog at a time.

The main goal of This Ole Dog Rescue is to provide a forever home and care for end of life senior dogs (12 years and up) and hospice dogs that have been left after the death of a loved one, surrendered to a shelter or abandoned
We are currently limited to around 10 dogs. Our dogs live together in a home based setting and are not in crates, kennels or outdoor runs so we need to be sure they all get along. We also want to make sure they get the care and attention they deserve.
Caring for senior dogs requires more time and money.. Many times the dogs we get are not in the best shape so the cost of veterinary care and medications can be high. We have more cases of incontinence, digestive issues and behavior issues like anxiety so they require more care and attention.
This Ole Dog Rescue is funded through donations from individuals, corporations, and grants from foundations. If you would like to help our mission see the donate page and consider joining our monthly donor program!
This has happened on occasion and it makes it very difficult. That dog has to stay in our quarantine area and taken out separate from the others. If an adopter can be found then that dog will go to a new home. Otherwise they will stay in the quarantine area and be given some extra attention!
We are set up as a final home for our residents. However, if someone comes and bonds with a dog and that dog bonds with them, then yes, we will consider letting that dog be adopted. We are not set up to pursue adopting out our dogs, vetting potential adopters and bringing that dog back to the sanctuary if it doesn't work out.
We currently do not have fosters but would consider them in the future. If you are interested in fostering please contact us!
